If you look around the blogosphere, you’ll see that there are a number of bloggers, new and experienced that have been able to pull in an income from their blogs.
Each blogger likely uses one or more of the methods mentioned below. From ads to creating your own course, it’s 100% possible to make money with your blog. And if you’re super serious – making a living from it is possible too!

1. make money with ads
Hosting ads on your blog in return for a commission per click or per ad impression is one of the most popular ways I see bloggers making money from their blogs.
Deciding to place ads on your sidebar or within your posts can be very profitable when you get into the higher page views as well.

Something to keep in mind is that in order to join these ad networks, you have to hit a certain number of monthly page views. For example, Adthrive requires that your blog reaches 100,000 monthly page views while you can join Monumetric as soon as you’ve reached 10,000 monthly page views.
One awesome plus with ads is that they’re completely passive. Once you put them up, they essentially work for you!
On the flip side, having a lot of ads throughout your blog may deter people from staying on your site and exploring it. Especially if you have them located in inconvenient places.
2. promote affiliate products
Want to share your favorite products with your readers and make a commission for each sale referred? Affiliate marketing is for you!
From digital to physical products, you can share whatever you’d like with your readers. But something to note is that you should only promote products that you actually use and love OR know for a fact your audience could benefit from.
Sharing products that don’t deliver great results could end up biting you in the butt and ultimately harm your blog’s credibility. Moral of the story: don’t promote something you wouldn’t use yourself just to make a quick buck.
Also, when done right, affiliate marketing shouldn’t feel slimy or super salesy. It should feel more like telling your best friend about an awesome new product you came across, how it’s helped you and why you think it could be of help to them too.
Popular Affiliate Programs
Pros & Cons of Affiliate Marketing:
A benefit to using affiliate marketing to monetize your blog is that you can diversify your income by joining a variety of different programs. That way you can scale, and increase your blog’s potential income.
One minor downside is that you typically have to wait between 30-90 days to receive your payout or even hit a threshold before getting paid. Also, if the product creator decides to close down their affiliate program and you’re doing really well with it, it could wipe out an entire stream of income, so that’s something to be considered as well.
Most digital products likely have an affiliate program, but if they don’t, reach out to the creator and see if they could create one!
Side note: Product or service creators may also change links, so I highly recommend using the WordPress plugin Pretty Link. That way if the creator changes your link, you can easily go through the settings and adjust the link within seconds.
3. Sponsored Posts
Let’s say your blog covers freelancing tips, a great way to bring in extra money would be to write about a brand or product that your audience would benefit from.
Essentially, you can join networks like IZEA and more easily connect with brands and advertisers you’d like to work with. After writing a post on the brand/product, you’ll receive compensation for introducing the product to your readers.
Side note: Be selective when you’re going through and picking your offers, and be considerate of what your readers would find helpful and/or useful.
Bonus: Create an Ebook or Course
In recent years, creating your own product is becoming a very popular monetization method for bloggers and for good reason! It’s relatively passive once set up and you can literally make sales while you sleep. Sounds pretty amazing, right?
This is one of the best routes to take as a blogger because you’re essentially in control of this income stream. You can offer discounts whenever you want, and the course won’t come down unless you want it to.
Another cool thing about having your own product is that you can set your prices to something you think is fair for the time + value you put into it.
A great platform for creating free or paid courses is Teachable, while a good place to host your ebook is SendOwl. Both programs make it easy for students to immediately access content right after payment goes through. Plus, they both allow you to easily set up an affiliate program of your own so you can reward others for sharing your content with their friends/readers.
There are lots of different methods you can go with to monetize your blog – you can apply all 4 methods or just 1. Either way, it’s important to make sure you understand the pros and cons of each, and consciously pick which ones you prefer for your blog.
Not everyone likes ads on their site, and some would prefer to create and sell their own products over promoting others. So it’s crucial to take a minute and decide which way you’d like to monetize your blog and then start putting that into practice.
